London Council Team Caught Following Animal Porn Twitter Account

The operator of Harrow Council's @champions_help account, a place designed to coordinate worthy local volunteer groups, has been rumbled following an extremely grim overseas account dedicated to distributing animal porography.

Local blogger Paul Boakes made the discovery, explaining on his iHarrow site that: "...following a porn account, on a council-operated account, is outrageous. How the council thinks it can get away with this, beggars belief. Who'd want to be associated with the Community Champions scheme if this is what happens – what next, are the council going to be promoting crystal meth and crack cocaine to school kids?"

Boakes has published a series of updates on the issue, also discovering that once he'd outed the problem the council changed its Twitter privacy settings to stop it displaying a list of accounts it followed.

It must be pretty boring running a council social media account full of abysmal life tips, FAV/RT questions no one ever responds to and retweeting the weather forecast every once in a while as if the council is somehow responsible for the nice days, but even so. Following an animal porn site is quite the mistake to make.

And it was a mistake, according to Harrow council, which explained: "This was an unfortunate mistake where an account was followed by accident. As soon as the error was found it was immediately fixed. We apologise for the mistake and we have tightened up our social media processes since this incident."

The same blogger also suggests the council has been buying followers to make itself look good, answering the mystery of why such a dull official presence might have nearly 22k followers. [iHarrow via Standard]
