Skype Outage Stops the World Holding Babies up to Webcams

Those who rely upon the sending of links to photographs of cats with hats on and transmitting messages about the wellbeing of babies via Skype for amusement are currently feeling frustration, with parts of the Microsoft-owned chat company's services currently unavailable.

The problem manifests itself here as a perpetually refreshing status icon, illustrated in the above screengrab of me and Gerald's perfunctory work-related chit-chat. This means the software's unaware of who's online or not, causing connection issues. Skype's own support pages say the problem is "an issue with the status settings of Skype," warning that some users "will not be able to change their status, their contacts will all show as offline and they will be unable to start Skype calls to them."

So it's not broken broken, just partially broken around the front end bit. Skype says it's working on a fix as you might expect, as leaving it broken and writing off the money might not be the best move. [Skype]
