People spend years mastering the tools of Photoshop. They labours arduously to create seamless images with no trace of manipulation. Lucas Blalock labours arduously as well. But in his art, the artefacts of cutting, duplicating, and transforming become the very backbone of the finished product
Bear with this video produced by PBS’ Art21, because it veers just a shade into “artspeak” territory. But behind the esoteric explanations are really beautiful images that Blalock creates by highlighting the very aspects of Photoshop that are usually signs of poor skills or errors in execution. His works are surreal and sometimes confusing, but tend to make you smile all the same.
