The parts of Nottingham that aren't currently wired into Virgin media's ultrafast cable network will soon be humming to the sound of faster internet and the smug harrumphs of satisfied men, with the network and its umbrella owner Liberty Media pledging to add 50,000 more premises to its 152Mb line pool.
The network says it's spending £25m to expand its cable coverage in Nottingham, with the money coming from the "Project Lightning" infrastructure upgrade budget -- a chest of £3bn put aside to, eventually, bring a possible 4 million extra homes within reach of Virgin Media's fibre and fibre-like cables.
Local development councillor Diana Meale said: "We welcome Virgin Media’s investment in Nottinghamshire’s broadband network, which will further extend coverage and choice for homes and businesses. The rollout of Ultrafast Internet will complement the County Council’s Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire programme and further strengthen our position as one of the best connected counties in the country – great news for the local economy, jobs and growth."
