YouTube’s taking big steps towards transforming itself into a media service that you pay for like you pay for Netflix. Aren’t you psyched?
So there are a bunch announcements today. First of all YouTube is jumping into the paid video fray with a new service called YouTube Red. For $10 / £6.50 a month, the service banishes ads. This part launches next week, but next year, your subscription will get you access to a vault of exclusive content. (DO NOT CONFUSE IT WITH PORN SITE REDTUBE.)
The new service will also cover the new YouTube Music app, which is launching today. The app seems to be an evolution of YouTube Music Key, the paid product that launched last year. It basically turns YouTube into a Spotify clone, and allows you to listen to YouTube in the background.
So what does this all mean? Well, people are increasingly paying for content, and Netflix has proven that with a good enough offering, millions will jump on board. Ad-free isn’t enough. So it all comes down to content—what’s YouTube going to give me?
