The people that take your money are apparently frighteningly bad at their jobs. Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC) level of customer service has been described as ‘abysmal’ by the Public Accounts Committee, and is said to be only getting worse.
HMRC contact centres answered only half of calls in the first half of 2015, which compares with the 72 per cent of calls it took last year. That’s shockingly bad. Worse still, only 39 per cent were answered within five minutes. HMRC has responded by saying that the gap between tax due and tax collected in the UK is now one of the lowest in the world, and that the organisation is understaffed.
The PAC has laid into HMRC regardless, with chair Megan Hillier saying it must “rapidly improve its customer service, previously described by the PAC as abysmal and now even worse.” The organisation is also said to have only prosecuted 11 people for offshore tax evasion in the past five years, despite having thousands of targets to chase.
Now then, any chance of a bit of money back?
