A little while back, we heard about a potentially huge competitive event of the future, dubbed the Robo-Olympics, and this one's cut from the very same cloth. Formula E has teamed up with Kinetik, and the two firms are set to launch a racing series for autonomous electric cars. It’ll be called ROBORACE (complete with shouty caps).
The first race is planned for the 2016-17 season, with each lasting an hour and taking place immediately before each Formula E race, using the very same tracks. 10 teams will compete, and each will have two cars. However, one of the teams will be 'crowd-sourced', in an attempt to discover and promote independent talent.
All teams will have to use the same autonomous vehicles, but will need to gain an edge over rivals by making the most of AI and optimising their real-time computing algorithms. Now this is a form of motorsport I might actually be interested in.
