Here's the Official Reason Will Smith Isn't in Independence Day: Resurgence

20th Century Fox dropped the new trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence (aka Independence Day 2) yesterday, and it looks almost exactly like the original, though with better special effects. The sequel picks up 20 years from when the original left off, and involves the same aliens that tried to destroy earth in 1996 returning for round two. Somebody call Optimus Prime.

As Jeff Goldblum's character David Levinson says, “Well it’s definitely bigger than the last one.” Sadly, there’ll be no Will Smith this time out. He didn't sign up to the movie, and promotional site War of 1996 has explained away his absence by saying his character Colonel Steven Hiller died in 2007, while testing the Earth Space Defense programme's 'first functional Hybrid Fighter'. Don't be too downbeat though Will -- you were mourned as a hero.

It’ll hit cinemas on 24 June 2016, so we can go back to concentrating on Star Wars for now. [War of 1996]
