Rail Workers Strike, Disrupting Christmas Train Services Between London and Scotland

By Aatif Sulleyman on at

It’s the news we’ve all been dreading. Hundreds of people hoping to get home in time for Christmas day will have to put up with major disruption on overnight train services between London and Scotland, as rail workers on the Caledonian Sleeper kick off a 48-hour strike.

Talks between members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union and service operator Serco broke down yesterday, with the RMT’s general secretary Mick Cash claiming Serco never had any intention of taking the talks process seriously. According to the RMT, there are more than 200 “potentially dangerous” defects on trains, which include dodgy power, disconnected smoke detectors and broken lighting and heating systems.

The 48-hour walk-out will start at 6.30pm this evening. Merry Christmas everyone. [Standard]
