Despite passing under the radar somewhat, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has smashed box office records in the UK and Ireland, and is set to take the crown for the biggest opening day and the biggest four-day opening of all time. Okay, as the most heavily-anticipated movie release since Jurassic World, it hardly comes as the biggest surprise, but a certain JJ Abrams will be mighty relieved.
The Force Awakens is estimated to have taken £32.8 million in the UK and Ireland from Thursday through to Sunday, beating off Jurassic World's previous best, after opening day figures of £9.6 million. An astonishing £2.4 million was snagged from midnight screenings alone, smashing all previous records. The film has also taken $238 million (£160 million) in the US alone and $517 million (£347 million) globally.
Last week, we figure out how much cash The Force Awakens needs to generate to keep Disney happy. So far, no complaints. [Variety]
