Mumbai Declares 15 Sites Selfie-Free After Tragic Selfie-Related Drowning

By Jamie Condliffe on at

Mumbai police have established 15 ‘no selfie’ zones around the Indian city after an 18-year-old girl drowned just last week while taking a picture of herself.

The BBC reports that the sites — mainly tourist destinations, including Bandra Bandstand, Sion Fort and Worli Fort — will be classed as “no selfie zones”. It’s not the first time Mumbai has outlawed the snaps: last year, similar bans were introduced at Hindu festival sites over fears of stampedes.

The new initiative was sparked by the death of a girl who was trying to take a picture of herself and two friends. Sadly, she fell into the sea water in front of which she was standing and drowned. Last year, a Japanese tourist slipped on stairs and died while taking a selfie at the Taj Mahal. [BBC]
