If you were a 'toon lovin' 90s kid, prepare yourself for the best news you'll have heard all week. A new film is on its way that will combine much-loved cartoon favourites from the Nickelodeon stable, in a mash-up movie that looks set to kindle the nostalgia of the pre-millenial generation.
Called NickToons, it’s being described as Who Framed Roger Rabbit with Nickelodeon characters. In other words, you'll get Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Doug, Hey Arnold, and tonnes of other childhood favourites on the big screen together.
Jared Hess, the co-writer and director of Napoleon Dynamite, has signed on as the perfect choice to direct, with the film including live-action and animated elements. Jarusha Hess, his wife and frequent collaborator, will co-write. Production duties will be handled by Mary Parent (previously responsible for The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, Godzilla, The Revenant, Pacific Rim and Noah), while Paramount will distribute.
Not much beyond the above is known about the film. Will Nickelodeon's classic live action stars (Clarissa, Smart Guy, et al) feature? How about stop-motion cult favourites Action League Now? The more the merrier, surely. With the OG Nickelodeon generation well into prime child-bearing age, it's the perfect chance to piggy-back off the grown ups' fond memories while feeding the youngsters a whole "new" gang of characters to obsess over.
Having said that, let's not forget how messed up some of these shows were. I'm thinking specifically of Ren and Stimpy, which I'm sure these days would be classed as an adult-orientated show. Check out a few clips below to see what I mean. [Deadline]
