Cambodia is affected by serious issues regarding timber trade, with illegal loggers believed to be working alongside dodgy government officials, as well as the military and police officers, in order to export wood on the sly. There’s a huge demand for luxury furniture in surrounding areas, including China, so there's lots of money to be made and plenty of people willing to grab a slice of the pie.
The country’s prime minister Hun Sen has pledged to tackle the problem, which is seeing vast swathes of forest destroyed. "I already gave two helicopters for raids and [National Military Police Commander] Sao Sokha has not fired a single rocket yet," he said this week. "I order that rockets be fired from above."
It sounds like a fairly extreme measure, and we’re not entirely sure that launching rockets at woodland would really help the situation, but it’s good to know that Sen’s heart is in the right place. He’s also recognised that public sector organisations may be helping the criminals, asking, "Where have all your eyes gone? The eyes of the police, the military police ... or are they involved?" Come on Cameron, at least try to make the global awards for 'Most Entertaining World Leader' an interesting battle. [Reuters]
