A German chap has gone to pretty extreme lengths to prove that you can wear a VR headset for an extended period of time without experiencing ‘physical problems’, though he had to take special medication to block up his waste pipes. Thorsten Wiedemann lived with an HTC Vive strapped around his face from 8-10 January as part of an art project called Disconnected, whiling away the hours playing games and wandering through virtual worlds.
Though he wasn’t allowed to relieve himself, he was certainly allowed to fill his guts, munching on a diet of bananas, water and various junk foods. It doesn’t sound too bad so far.
However, Wiedemann was only allowed to sleep for two and a half hours each day -- with the headset on, of course -- and admits he had a panic attack during the 25th hour of the experiment. Despite this, he maintains he was fine throughout, experiencing no nausea, headaches or eye problems.
So there you have it. If you're happy to brush off a panic attack and pump yourself full of medical goodies, you can spend your whole weekend floating around in a virtual paradise. Just brace yourself for the worst when the world eventually falls out of your rear end. [Vice]
