Nintendo's First Amazing App Idea is... Chat and Photos

By Gary Cutlack on at

Nintendo has released first information on what we can expect to see from its push into Android and iOS, with users able to register to download Miitomo from the middle of February.

Miitomo is described by Nintendo as being a "social experience," one that uses the Wii's Mii character system to create a world of safe online chit chat. It sounds like Nintendo is trying to launch a kids version of Facebook Messenger, with the announcement describing a world where: "By answering questions in Miitomo users will be able to discover surprising information and secrets about their friends, as well as share their experiences with others easily by taking and sharing photos featuring their Mii using the Miifoto feature."

It all sounds like quite a convoluted way of getting people to sign up for a thing. Nintendo's launching a new My Nintendo rewards scheme alongside the app, plus users will need to sign in with an umbrella Nintendo Account that'll pull in data from existing social sites.

Users can pre-register and get their accounts ready for action from February 17, with the app itself arriving some time during March. [Miitomo via Nintendo]
