Pizza delivery… things(?) just became even less sexy. Domino’s has announced that it’s bringing delivery robots to Wellington, New Zealand, and they look a bit like massive old Apple Macs with eyes, strapped to four wheels. Though loads of people also think they’re adorable.
Hailed as the ‘world’s first autonomous pizza delivery vehicle’, the Domino’s Robotic Unit (DRU) is battery-powered, and should be able to complete deliveries within a 20-mile radius on a single charge. The clip below shows that they’re able to drive on both hard and soft surfaces, and can automatically detect and avoid obstacles. However, there are no cars on the roads in the promo video, which we can imagine being more than a bit troublesome in real life.
Up to 10 pizzas can be stored in the DRU’s heated compartment, and a unique customer code will unlock it. Domino’s seems to be banking on everyone in Wellington being really nice, as I'd definitely chase the thing down and try to pry it open if I found one. Even worse people than me would probably flip it over too. [Verge]
