Ryan Collins, aka the guy who leaked those naked pictures you've probably seen of Kate Upton and Jennifer Lawrence (and lots more really, really good-looking celebs), has pled guilty in court. The 36-year-old from Pennsylvania has been charged with felony computer hacking and one count of unauthorised access to a protected computer to obtain information.
Between 2012 and 2014, Collins managed to crack into more than 100 accounts using phishing emails disguised as official messages from Apple and Google. He also used a program called iBrute to illegally get hold of iCloud files -- many of which were nudes -- and posted them online.
"By illegally accessing intimate details of his victims' personal lives, Mr Collins violated their privacy and left many to contend with lasting emotional distress, embarrassment and feelings of insecurity," said David Bowdich of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. "We continue to see both celebrities and victims from all walks of life suffer the consequences of this crime and strongly encourage users of Internet-connected devices to strengthen passwords and to be skeptical when replying to emails asking for personal information."
He faces five years in prison, but may only serve 18 months, despite the emotional damage he caused. If this shameful episode proves anything, it's that everyone needs to brush up on internet security. Phishing emails -- come on Hollywood. [Gawker]
