By Aatif Sulleyman on at

Professor Tony Dyson, who created the original R2-D2 back in 1977, has reportedly died at his home in Gozo, Malta. He was found on Thursday morning, after concerned neighbours informed police that his front door had been left open.

An autopsy is to be held to determine Dyson’s cause of death, but no foul play is suspected.

Dyson also worked on Superman 2, Moon Raker, Dragon Slayer and The Empire Strikes Back, and designed and built robots for a number of consumer electronics firms, including Sony, Philips and Toshiba.

Tony, thank you for the memories. [TVM]
