YouTube's Building a Periscope Alternative Called Connect, According to Reports

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. That may be just what YouTube is doing, according to a new report from VentureBeat, which suggests the video company is building a Periscope competitor that will be called Connect.

According to the report, the new standalone app would allow you to stream video straight from your phone, just like other live streaming software you can currently use. VentureBeat also claims that there would be ways to chat and tag, as well a news feed of archived content from other users (as well as the ability to choose not to store video after it’s aired). Hardly ground-breaking stuff, but the ease of integration with an existing YouTube account might make it an easy sell for many.

Live streams have been possible for a while on YouTube, of course, but only via its Creator Studio, which is a clunky experience in a world where apps like Periscope exist. So far YouTube has declined to comment on the the news. [VentureBeat]
