Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer – Every Clue and Easter Egg We Spotted

By Gerald Lynch on at

Have you seen the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer yet? No? Right, then drop what you're doing, put your feet up, turn the speakers up or plug your headphones in and enjoy: this looks like it could turn out to be bloody incredible:

Due for release on December 16th and helmed by British director Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the so-called Star Wars "Anthology" movies – stand-alone tales that aren't directly concerned with the ongoing numbered Star Wars movie saga, which was reignited last Christmas with The Force Awakens. I've been sceptical of the idea in the past, but on the strength of this first trailer, I think we're in for a treat. Breaking down the trailer scene-by-scene, here's everything we've spotted of note in the new Star Wars trailer.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer Analysis

Here's our first look at Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones. The star of the film (it's great to see a second female lead in the new Star Wars universe), she sounds like a bit of a wild person. Seemingly a prisoner of the Rebellion (note the handcuffs, and the fact that this is set just before Star Wars: A New Hope)...

...it looks as though the Rebellion is using her chequered past ("forgery of Imperial documents, possession of stolen property, assault, resisting arrest") to force her into an ultimatum to join the suicide squad out to capture the Death Star plans - the movie's central conceit. Erso is clearly being paraded around the Yavin 4 base which features prominently at the end of A New Hope. There, she's interrogated by none other than (a recast) Mon Mothma...

...who reveals Erso has been on her own since the age of 16. Early rumours had suggested that fellow-star Mads Mikkelsen may be Erso's father – the mastermind behind the Death Star's construction. Could it be that his commitment to the Empire has lead him to become estranged from his daughter? He doesn't pop up in the trailer so we'll have to wait and see. But that'd explain Erso's lonely adolescence.

A quick cut to show that Erso is a baddass, – complete with blown-up OG Stormtroopers...

(“This is a rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel.” is her response. Fair enough.)... and we're learning about her mission against the backdrop of...

...A FRICKIN' FLEET OF STAR DESTROYERS JUST CRUISING PAST THE UNDER-CONSTRUCTION DEATH STAR! Definitely the coolest shot in the trailer, that one. So, Mon Mothma explains that an Imperial weapons test is about to be carried out, which suggests the Rebellion really hasn't got a clue of the scale of what they're going to come up against (or the fact that a teenager will eventually blow it up without even using his weapons guidance systems because of science-fiction's most ridiculous design oversight...but I digress...) Erso is tasked with scoping the joint.  And going by the next shot...

...seems to become pretty well embedded with the Rebellion. That dude by her side? That's Diego Luna, whose character name we're not yet sure of. By the knowing glances he keeps giving Erso, he seems to be an old buddy or something. He's certainly sympathetic anyway, and has a bit of a Han Solo vibe going on with that jacket:

Luna looks as though he's going to become part of the crack-team that will make the Oceans 11 style raid on the Imperials, who seem to be lead by this guy:

...Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn. He's done up in fancy Imperial commander garb. Nice cape – perhaps some kind of peer of Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin, who will eventually be given control of the Death Star? We then get a load of shots of the supporting cast which includes...

Forest Whitaker...

...Donnie Yen (showing off the kind of weapon skills that would suggest he's got some Jedi in him, albeit sans lightsaber)...

...and Wen Jiang. There's no sign of Riz Ahmed or Alan Tudyk, but I'm going to guess the scene of Erso running around Canary Wharf tube station...

...sees Erso throwing a glance back at the bipedal robot that Alan Tudyk is rumoured to be voicing. With Whitaker seemingly the person asking "what will you do when they [the Imperials] catch you?", I'm going to guess this lot are part of the infiltration gang too. That leaves us with a load of fan-friendly nods to Other Cool Star Wars Stuff™:

...a possible Dark Trooper (which would be particularly interesting as it's part of the now-deceased Star Wars Extended Universe, having first debuted in classic first-person shooter Dark Forces. It'd mean there's still some life in the best part of the now non-canon comics, books and games following the Disney takeover of Lucasfilm)...

...an exploding Imperial transport shuttle on a tropical planet we've never seen before...

...this mystery Sith-looking guy, approaching what appears to be a carbon freezing chamber or something like Darth Vader's life-support/meditation chamber, flanked by the Emperor's Royal guard (AKA, the coolest of all uniformed Imperial minions) suggesting that old scraggy-face himself will make an appearance. Hopefully to deliver this line just one more time:

And then there's the money shot...

...AT-ATs! The walking tanks that stole the show on Hoth in Empire Strikes Back, which is obviously the best ever Star Wars battle. Seems like they can handle some warmer climes too, giving the tropical setting here. Hopefully those 'trooper masks have some ventilation system or they're going to fog up something awful. And finally, we end with this:

Erso in the garb of a Tie Fighter pilot. Will she...ahem...rebel against her one time captors, the Rebellion, and join forces with the Empire? Or will this be part of a disguise to infiltrate their ranks? There's definitely the suggestion of some sort of inner turmoil going on here, and it all reminds me of the excellent YA Star Wars novel that was released last year, Lost Stars, which you should definitely give a go if you're after a light read.

So there you have it. Jam-packed with clues and nods back to the original films. But, again, like The Force Awakens (if not more so), this seems certainly to have a flavour all of its own – a darker, more gritty look at some unexplored corners of the Star Wars universe.
