Now You Can Stop Cold Calls by Sending a Text Message

Hey, have you been mis-sold PPI? Almost certainly not, but that hasn't stopped the world's worst people - cold callers and scam artists - from using this question as an excuse to ring up and hassle you.

So it brings us great pleasure to pass on the news that, according to Sky News, it is now even easier to get your number listed with the Telephone Preference Service. All you need to do is send a text message. TPS is the government approved list of people who have opted in to not be hassled by cold callers - and if telemarketers do call you, they're technically breaking the law.

To join the list, all you now need to do is text "TPS" followed by your mobile number to 78070. It might take up to 28 days to kick in properly - but after that, you can be confident that if you get a call from an unknown number, it is less likely to be someone trying to sell you something.

And yes, TPS works on both landlines and mobiles. According to Ofcom, only 48% of people realise TPS works on mobiles.

Of the new text service, TPS head John Mitchison is quoted as saying "Texting will make it easier for people to register their mobile numbers on the TPS, which is the only official no-call list, and help us stamp out rogue callers once and for all by giving the Information Commissioner more ammunition to prosecute these cases."

So get on it and send that text. You'll never have to worry about PPI again.
