Films, Games, Events: What to Get up to This Weekend

By Aatif Sulleyman on at

Chop-chop, get your Prime Minister and England manager job applications in, the weekend's about to start. Here's what to get up to once you've nailed those cover letters.

Cast aside all of your fears about Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. Against all expectations, it’s meant to be rather good. Or at least, a fair bit better than everyone was expecting. Joanna Lumley is, surprise, surprise, the shining light, but whether or not she saves it from feeling a bit like one of those tired old Christmas specials is debatable. One for the nostalgic amongst you.

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens or Resident Evil 5? Loveable geekery or zombies, violence and stunning graphics? This week’s toss-up is too tough to call, with both of this week’s big releases getting top reviews. Why not just book Monday off, and give them both the attention they deserve.

Are you trying to tell me that the Euro 2016 quarter-finals and Wimbledon highlights aren’t your thing? Savour them, they’re almost over! Fine, I guess there a few other things to look forward to over the next few days.

Top of our list is the London Gaming Market, taking place this Sunday at the Royal National Hotel. Video games, rare items and incredible merchandise are on the menu, so it’ll be well worth a visit. The International Magic Festival in Edinburgh, Paddle Round the Pier in Brighton (where you’re encouraged to literally paddle around the pier) and snappily-titled The Story of Children’s Television from 1946 to Today in Bristol are also right up our street.

Of course, this weekend marks the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme too, and there’ll be plenty of opportunities to pay your respects all over the country.
