After a testing pre-release backlash to the concept, the all-female Ghostbusters reboot has been warmly (if not rapturously) received by critics. And though its $46 million dollar opening box office haul is far from being a record breaker (the film opened behind kids animation The Secret Life of Pets) it seems almost certain that the Melissa McCarthy-fronted film will get a second outing.
Speaking to The Wrap, a top-level Sony executive has all-but confirmed plans to extend the series beyond this first reboot flick.
“The ‘Ghostbusters’ world is alive and well," President of Worldwide Distribution at Sony Rory Bruer told The Wrap on Sunday. “I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise.
“While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen".
Though it's far from perfect, I really enjoyed the new Ghostbusters film. And for those that munched their popcorn through the credits in anticipation for a post-credits scene with me, it seems that juicy last-minute sequel tease at the end could now become a reality sooner rather than later.
