Former professional footballer Dalian Atkinson has died after being shot with a taser by police in Telford. West Mercia Police said that officers were called in after receiving a report of 'concern for the safety of an individual' at around 01.30 this morning.
The 48-year-old played for a number of clubs including Ipswich Town and Aston Villa and is best remembered for winning Match of the Day's 1992/93 Goal of the Season award for this cracking effort against Wimbledon.
He was pronounced dead at 03.00, after going into cardiac arrest on his way to hospital.
“West Mercia Police can confirm that officers responded to a report for the concern for the safety of an individual at approximately 1.30am this morning at an address in Telford," said a police statement. “Upon arrival Taser was deployed and a 48-year-old man, who subsequently received medical attention, was pronounced dead at approximately 3am. West Mercia Police are unable to comment any further as the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and will assist the IPCC with their inquiries.”
The incident follows a similar case in June, where a 43-year-old died in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire after being tasered by police. [BBC]
