Fingerprint scanners have made our phones more secure and convenient to unlock, but they still only seem to exist as obvious-looking buttons and sensors. What if there was a better way? Xiaomi is teasing one for its upcoming Mi 5s smartphone.
A teaser image posted by the company seems to confirm rumours that the Mi 5s will have an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, negating the need for a dedicated button or sensor for people to unlock their phones.
While dedicated fingerprint scanning sensors and buttons barely qualify as a problem, it's still something companies have been trying to fix. Apple has a bunch of patents regarding button-less fingerprint recognition, and Qualcomm is actively working on something called Sense ID.
Sense ID involves sensors embedded beneath a phone's display, and using ultrasonic technology to scan fingers. It's not just about aesthetics either, since ultrasonic tech will allow for more accurate fingerprint recognition. According to rumours, this is the system Xiaomi will be using.
