Bored and supposedly lonely men are said to be turning to the robotic and slightly female tones of Apple's Siri assistant and its ilk for company -- and maybe more.
The discovery comes via Ilya Eckstein, the CEO of machine-to-language specialist Robin Labs, which makes its own "eyes-free" virtual assistant, and who claims that its algorithms are now spending more time than ever before coming up with ways of fending off the misdirected sexual advances of confused or perhaps just bantering men.
Eckstein said of their motivations to hit on a bot: "People want to flirt, they want to dream about a subservient girlfriend, or even a sexual slave. It may just be more for laughs, or something deeper underneath the surface," before going on to blame "teenagers and truckers without girlfriends" for performing most of the lewd requests.
He says that around five per cent of all interactions with his company's Robin chat bot and assistant are sexually motivated in some way, whether that's actually trying to get it to talk dirty or just people looking for something to do. Around 30 per cent of chats aren't even about anything either, and seem to be just bored people, already up to date on their Netflix watch lists and the day's wanking chores, talking at their phone out of the sadness and emptiness of it all.
