Kanye West Isn't a Big Fan of the Apple/Tidal Rivalry

By Tom Pritchard on at

Famed egomaniac Kanye West isn't a very happy chappy at the moment. He's been lamenting how some potential projects haven't come to fruition, and it's somehow due to the fact that Apple and Tidal don't get along.

Obviously competition between services is a good thing, but Kanye doesn't seem to happy about it all. He claims that the 'rivalry' between Tidal and Apple Music has caused some projects to fall through and never see the light of day. The main example was the song Pop Style which would have featured him, Drake, and Jay-Z, but never made it onto Drake's VIEWS album thanks to streaming rivalry.

"Y’all didn’t get, what y’all were supposed to get with me and Drake on this song because of some Tidal/Apple bullshit. Every time I perform this song I think about this shit. I think about the politics. I think about how hard I go for music, for art, for y’all.

It will never be a Watch The Throne 2. You know why? Because that’s the reason why I wasn’t on the song. I wasn’t on the song cause of Hov. Cause it’s this TIDAL/Apple bullshit. And this shit be getting me tight every time I perform this muthafucka."

For those of you that don't know, Drake has been very publicly affiliated with Apple Music since it was first unveiled early last year. Kanye, on the other hand, has been heavily invested in Tidal. Not only is he co-owner of the streaming service, he also publicly declared that his latest album The Life of Pablo would be a Tidal exclusive (even though this ended up not being the case later on).

Presumably there are contracts and other business obligations to take into consideration here, but I do wonder whether these issues can be dealt with by sitting down and talking then through. Unless certain egos are getting in the way. [The Fader via Ubergizmo]
