Stray Anchor Cripples Channel Islands Internet

By Aatif Sulleyman on at

A ship absentmindedly dragging its anchor along the seabed of the English Channel has accidentally severed three main internet cables, leaving people on the Channel Islands even more cut off from the rest of the world.

Jersey’s main operator JT says the ship owner’s insurance will pay for repairs, which could take up to a week. Unfortunately, it hasn’t yet managed to track down the ship, and is currently funnelling all communications traffic through a single link to France.

“With all traffic now using this connection, customers may notice some impact on services,” said Daragh McDermott, JT’s director of corporate affairs. “It is exceptionally unlucky and unprecedented for three submarine cables to the UK to be cut in the same day.”

I don’t envy the engineers lumbered with this particular job. [BBC]
