Everyone’s been there. Stuck behind the brash, pushy, immaculately dressed, bar-hogging group of media/law/finance wankers, all of whom have about eight equally wankery, banterous, personal space-invading pals stood behind you, barking cocktail orders through your face.
This particularly repulsive breed of human doesn’t care that there are only two members of staff behind the bar. Nothing’s coming between them and their #cocktails #squadgoals #aboutlastnight Instagram post. The problem’s especially bad at this time of year.
Fortunately, there’s hope in the form of Barclaycard’s prototype Pay @ Pump. It’s a contactless, self-serve ale -- not lager, for head reasons -- pump that lets you dodge the cocktail crowd and grab your drink in double-quick time.
All you need to do is select your pint of choice on the touchscreen, pay with a tap of your contactless card and stick your pint glass at its base. The pump contains an electronic valve, which opens to allow beer to flow through. A liquid flow meter ensures the right amount of good stuff comes out.
“I’m sure everyone has been stuck behind the person who orders the most complicated cocktail on the menu or a round of ten drinks for their group of friends,” said Barclaycard’s commercial director of digital consumer payments, Tami Hargreaves. “When people told us that waiting time was one of their biggest annoyances, we wanted to help solve a common problem with a simple solution. Pay @ Pump could easily be the answer; by putting the festive cheer back into buying beer – a win-win for both bars and bar-goers!
“If the trial is successful, Pay @ Pump could be rolled out not only in bars and pubs but also at events and concerts to help speed up service.”
We want it. We want it now.
