Apply Now to be the Government's Official Porn Censor

A new website has launched looking for candidates to apply for the job of government porn censor. The New Government Jobs website offers the chance to get paid all day to look at porn. We know what you're thinking: This is your dream job, right?

Well, umm, unfortunately it's a parody created by the Open Rights Group to raise awareness of how wildly implausible and stupid the government's plans are for the forthcoming the Digital Economy Bill.

The proposed law will force porn websites to verify the age of users - the upshot of which is that the it will require the BBFC to attempt to classify all of the porn on the internet (!). The even scarier thing for digital rights activists is that if websites refuse to comply, the BBFC will then ISPs to block non-compliant websites.

The website features a number of amusing videos featuring a government recruiter outlining what the "job" entails. The launch has been timed to coincide with the bill entering committee stage - about half way through the bill's passage to becoming law.

"The Government’s proposals could leave millions of UK citizens vulnerable to Ashley Madison style hacks", warns Open Rights Group executive director Jim Killock, who adds that "To make their plans work, they would need to classify and block thousands and thousands of legal websites. This is the online equivalent of painting the Forth Road Bridge and while these proposals might create jobs for the BBFC, they are unlikely to stop tech savvy teens from viewing pornography."

The broader impact is that the law could pave the way for the same technology or legal framework being used against other types of website, and the ORG has launched a petition urging the government not to censor legal content. At the time of writing it has received almost 20,000 signatures.
