For the past few weeks, the Joker has been the biggest topic of conversation in the world of comic book movies. Warner Bros. is reportedly developing at least two new films starring the character, only one of which would star Suicide Squad’s Jared Leto. And in a new interview, Leto admitted he’s just as confused as we are.
Leto spoke to ODE about the upcoming films this week and said the following:
I’m a little confused too, but yeah, there are a couple of things happening in the DC world and I loved the Joker, he’s a great character, a really fun character to play. It’s a big universe and when you play the Joker, there’s no ownership there. You have the honour of holding the baton for a little while and then passing it off. But there are other films in development and I’m excited to see what comes from them.
Now, watch the video, and see how careful Leto is with every word he says when discussing the topic. He’s confused but not frazzled.
If you’re just joining us, the reason Leto would be confused is there are actually three Joker movies currently in the works. (That we know of.) One is a film that would team the Joker up with Harley Quinn, and Leto would co-star in that with Margot Robbie. He says as much at the start of the above video. Then there’s a second film, produced by Martin Scorsese and directed by Todd Phillips, that’s reportedly a Joker origin story unrelated to the DC Universe films. That means Leto would not play the character in that movie; the wild rumor of the week is that WB is looking at Leonardo DiCaprio for the role, though that’s almost assuredly never going to happen.
After that rumour broke, reports were that Leto was upset about the possibility of DiCaprio joining the film, but he seems very, very calm and level-headed about it in the above video. So either his publicist gave him a good talking to, early reports were exaggerated, or it’s a bit of both.
Oh, and the third Joker movie? That’s Suicide Squad 2, which Leto would star in. And if we’re counting potential Joker projects, how can Matt Reeves make a potential Batman trilogy and not have the Joker in it? So yes, it’s all confusing, but the takeaway is we’ll be seeing lots of purple and green on screen in the future. [ODE via Heroic Hollywood]
