Ryanair Cancels Hundreds of Flights After 'Messing Up' Pilot Holidays

By Kim Snaith on at

Budget airline Ryanair has said it'll cancel 40-50 flights every day over the next six weeks as pilots take last minute holidays.

The company has a backlog of staff needing to take annual leave before the end of the holiday year which has resulted in a lot of their pilots taking holiday at the same time. It's a result of the company's holiday year shifting from April to March to instead run from January to December. So while pilots previously had six months left to spread out their holidays, they now only have three.

82 flights were cancelled yesterday alone, with more cancellations expected every day in the next several weeks. It's estimated that up to 285,000 passengers could be affected, all of which will need to be compensated or rescheduled onto a different flight.

If you're due to fly with Ryanair, you can check their website for a list of cancelled flights — currently updated until the end of the week. Thank god all the pilots will get a nice holiday — but you might not, if you booked with Ryanair. [BBC]
