Don't let anyone ever tell you that campaigning doesn't work. It does, provided you work hard enough, as today's news that Nestlé is releasing tube of smarties that only contain the orange coloured sweets.
Do orange smarties still taste orangey? Did they ever, or did everyone imagine that? In any case we can all agree that the orange ones are the best, but they're always in such pathetic quantities when you buy smarties to enjoy. Now, though, we can eat as many as we like without having to suffer through all those other bright colours.
Nestlé claims that it made the decision before people would not let go of the idea that orange-only tubes could be a thing, with the company claiming to receive 500 letters a day. A Nestle spokesperson said:
"It simply got to the point where we had to make it happen. The orange ones are the only Smarties that have their own flavour and they have their very own cult following because of that. The distinctive flavour also means that manufacturing them in high volume, on their own, is slightly more difficult to do given the different process and recipe required to get that orange-y taste."
So they do still taste orangey, and that explains why they're far less common than the rest of the rubbish chocolate-only flavours dots.
The orange tubes are only available in the large 150 gram size, much like the pink smarties that have been on sale for the past couple of years. It seems like the only supermarket that stocks them at the moment is Asda, and are currently on offer for £1 a tube. [Standard]
