It's safe to say that Wimpy peaked a long time ago. Once it had hundreds of locations across the UK, and was one of the top dogs of the British fast food industry. Until the likes of McDonald's came along. Now, though, the company is down to a mere 74 locations, and is a shadow of what it once was. But that might change, because the company is planning a comeback.
Speaking to the Daily Star, a spokesperson said, "We do have some exciting new plans in terms of continued expansion and an investment programme." There's no information on exactly what that means just yet, other than the fact we'll start finding out from next February.
Is it a surprise? A little bit, but given how the past few years have been rampant with nostalgia and reclaiming the bygone days of old it also kind of isn't. Does that make sense? Possibly, possibly not. Whatever the reason, Wimpy is coming back. Hopefully it'll remain a fast food complex, though, and not rebrand itself as some sort of hipster gluten free vegan powerhouse. That's great the for gluten free hipster vegans, but not so much for all us fatties who want to eat a burger without being seen going into McDonald's or KFC.
In any case, children of the '70s and '80s are bound to be rather excited. Unless their parents never let them go to Wimpy, in which case they're probably wondering what all the fuss is about. [Daily Star]
