A new trilogy of films set in Star Wars’ galaxy far, far away is on its way, but despite what many fans have been hoping, director Rian Johnson says that these new stories won’t revisit the Knights of the Old Republic.
While Johnson himself is a huge fan of the two Knights of the Old Republic games and understands that fans of the series would love to see it adapted for the big screen, the director recently told Mashable he doesn’t believe their story would really be compelling enough to warrant a trilogy. Like many filmmakers presented with the chance to grab hold of a franchise like Star Wars, Johnson’s far more interested in doing his own thing.
“Oh, [fans] love Knights of the Old Republic. I played that game when it first came out and it was like, god, I loved it. Yeah, that’s a fantastic game. And I understand it, the instinct to automatically go to something that you know and love, that you’ve already seen.
To me what’s really fun is the notion of what new stuff are we gonna see, what new stories can we tell?”
When pressed about what he was considering if not Knights of the Old Republic, Johnson was honest and explained that we’re still so far out from the film’s (unannounced) release date that he doesn’t have a concrete idea of what he wants to do, and that’s more than fine. Johnson’s been entrusted with one of the most beloved properties in the history of cinema, as much as we may want him to hurry up, it’s probably best that he takes his time and gets this right. Plus, we want him to be able to bask in what’s sure to be plenty of Last Jedi success once the film is out next week. [Mashable]
