Waitrose is about to restrict the sale of the most highly caffeinated energy drinks to children, with a move to ban sales of the garish beverages to under-16s expected to be in place by early March.
The restriction includes any drink that contains 150mg of caffeine per litre or more, drinks that already have to carry a disclaimer about their brain-warping powers and warn that they're not ideal things to give to already hyperactive children.
Waitrose's Simon Moore said: "As a responsible retailer we want to sell these products in line with the labelling guidance. These drinks carry advice stating that they are not recommended for children, so we’re choosing to proactively act on that guidance, particularly given the widespread concerns which have been raised about these drinks when consumed by under 16s."
