BBFC Starts its Online Porn Age Verification Consultation Today

By Tom Pritchard on at

You all remember that the government is putting up age gates round the adult-themed sections of the internet, and those gates were supposed go up next month. Until those plans were delayed, because nobody really knows how they're going to be implemented yet. And now's the chance for you to have your say.

The consultation has been launched by the BBFC, which will take on the task of regulating porn sites (amongst other things) and ensure that sites are actually securing things correctly and not giving kids easy access to the very large world of online smut.

Having been to a briefing about the plans, it was made very clear that the main concern right now is that there are no solid regulations on how the age verification systems will be rolled out - especially since there are currently multiple competing systems that hope to be in use. It seems this consultation is the next step in ensuring those regulations are concrete and prevent any of the problems pointed out by critics of the new laws.

The consultation includes draft guidelines, as well as information on how to have your say - mostly asking people if they agree with what's already been laid out and whether they have any comments they want to add. Nice and simple really, though there is a fair bit of reading to do.

More information can be found on the BBFC's website, and you only have until 23rd April before the consultation window closes. [ISPreview]
