Xiaomi is one of the biggest phone companies in China, and one of the largest smartphone companies in the world. But the international availability of its devices hasn't been too great, with phones officially available in a handful of countries - most of which are in Asia. Import models have been easily available here, but now the company has partnered with Three to officially bring the devices to the UK.
Xiaomi has made some of its products available here, like the Mi Band 2, but following its expansion into Europe via Spain last year it finally has its sights on us. While Xiaomi phones have been available, if you know where to look, the fact that they're going to be stocked in Three shops around the country means it's going to be far, far easier. The deal with Three's parent company Hutchinson Whampoa also means Xiaomi devices will be available in other European countries like Austria, Denmark, and Sweden.
Tom Malleschitz, chief digital officer at Three UK, said
“We have been watching Xiaomi’s success from afar and impressed with the huge range of connected devices that they currently offer.
This partnership provides us with another leading brand in our smartphone range and also opens the door for innovative new connected products that we can provide to Three customers in the future. So watch this space!”
That statement also hints that we won't just be seeing Xiaomi phones in your nearest Three store, so there's a possibility that we'll the company's other gadgets hitting shop shelves in the near future.
Unfortunately we don't know anything about the specifics of the deal, or when Xiaomi phones are actually going to be made available. It hopefully won't be very long, since I'm sure Three will want to get them on the shelves as quickly as possible. [TechRadar]
