Over the past few days there has been some speculation that Amazon has a second generation Echo Show on the way, because the item is currently out of stock on the UK site. Bit of an odd way to generate rumours, but hey. That hasn't happened, but Amazon has revealed that it's bringing Show Mode, and the Show Mode Charging Dock to the UK. That's basically the next best thing.
You may remember that Show Mode and the Show Mode Dock launched in the US back in June, and if you don't let me remind you. Show Mode is a special feature that turns your Fire tablet into an Echo Show-like device, complete with Alexa commands and all that stuff. The Show Mode Dock is a stand for the tablet that makes sure your tablet is visible and doesn't run out of juice by the end of the day. It also automatically loads up Show Mode when you put the tablet in place.
Now the US launch involved different-sized docks available for the Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 tablets, which is happening here too. At the moment you can only buy the Dock as a £109.98 bundle with the new Fire HD 8 (more on that later), but Amazon has confirmed it will be available as a stand-alone product for both the current Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 for £39.99 and £49.99 respectively. There's no set release date for that, however, so we're just going to have to be patient. Current generation Fire HD 8 and HD 10 tablets will be getting Show Mode in a future update too, but again there's no release window yet.
If you want the new Fire HD 8, you should know that it costs £79.99, has an 8-inch 1280 x 800 display, a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 1.5GB of RAM, a choice of 16 or 32GB of internal storage, microSD expansion up to 400GB, a 10 hour battery life, a front-facing camera, and Dolby Atmos Audio. Pre-orders open today, ready for a 4th October launch date, and as mentioned before you can bundle it with the Show Mode Dock for a total price of £109.98.
On top of this Amazon has also announced a new Fire HD 8 Kids Edition, coming with all the same features as the new Fire HD 8 (minus the 16GB storage option) along with all the usual kid-friendly features. That means parental controls, a kid-proof case in a variety of colours, a two year no-questions-asked guarantee, plus a year of Amazon Fore for Kids Unlimited with over 5,000 age-appropriate books, videos, apps, games, websites, and audiobooks.
Pre-orders open up today as well, ready for the same 4th October release date. The Fire HD Kids Edition is a little pricier at £129.99, but Amazon has announced if you a two-device multipack you'll save £50 off the total cost.
