Pokémon Go wasn't the first augmented reality game, nor the first to bring real world aspects into the virtual world. But it was the first one to gain enough popularity for the rest of the gaming industry to notice. We've had clones featuring Garfield, Jurassic Park, The Walking Dead, with more on the way. Now the latest one to mimic that style of play is Ghostbusters.
The basics of Ghostbusters World seem to be almost identical to Pokémon Go. Ghosts appear in the real world on a map, with higher concentrations appearing around 'rally point' that are officially supposed to be dimensional gateways. Just like how Pokémon hang around Pokéstops. The main difference, however, is that instead of throwing Pokéballs and using berries to increase your chances, Ghostbusters World has you fight it out with the ghosts before you can trap them. But once trapped those ghosts belong to you, and can be used to fight with.
That said, as you can see in the video above, there are other features that seem more similar to a standard mobile game. It has a story mode, where you can battle through an original plot (with cut scenes and a proper script), daily dungeons, and raids that pit you and your friends against powerful monsters like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. According to Google Play it'll also be freemium, but how freemium it will be has yet to be seen. The type of gameplay seen, beyond those copied from Pokémon Go seem to correlate with previous games that let you buy power-ups and similar items for an in-game advantage.
But I'm basing that on this short video, not gameplay. Considering we can't download the game for ourselves to see, there's no telling what will be involved until it's released. Hopefully it won't be a game obviously designed to encourage pay-to-win mechanics. [Android Police]
