I was but a wee child when the very first Toy Story came out, back when the idea of a computer animated film was completely unheard of. 22 years later and we've just been sent the first teaser trailer for the fourth instalment in the franchise (not including all those shorts). What's going on? We're not sure, and this teaser trailer isn't very revealing.
Here's the official synopsis:
Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.
Forky is clearly the newcomer in this trailer in the middle of an identity crisis, but if he's not a toy what is he? He's clearly been made out of things Bonnie found around the house, but what are the implications of that? Are all objects sentient beings, or do they gain sentience when you use them as toys? The philosophy of this film is going to make a few people very confused. Except the kids this film is aimed at, that is, because kids don't care about all that stuff. I doubt anyone at Pixar did either.
The film opens in the UK on 21st June 2019.
