We Now Have A Video Of Xiaomi's Foldable Phone

By Holly Brockwell on at

Xiaomi president Lin Bin has posted a video of the company's new folding phone in action on Chinese social network Weibo, and it's fascinating.

The accompanying post says (a rough translation, so it's a bit shonky):

Xiaomi double folding mobile phone is coming! After conquering a series of technical problems such as flexible folding screen technology, 4-way folding hinge technology, flexible cover technology, and MIUI adaptation, we made the first folding screen mobile phone, which should be the world's first double folding mobile phone. This symmetrical double-folded form perfectly combines the experience of the tablet and mobile phone, which is both practical and beautiful. Although it is still an engineering machine, it is sent out for everyone to see. Welcome everyone to forward / comment / like. If you like it, we will consider making a mass production machine in the future.

In addition, we want to give this engineering machine a name, what do you think is good? I think of two: Xiaomi Dual Flex, Xiaomi MIX Flex. Welcome everyone to make suggestions!

That post tells us it's a prototype but they're considering it for production, and that it doesn't have an official name yet.

The post also claims it's the first folding phone, which is of course not true, but Lin Bin might have meant Xiaomi's first. The double-fold is indeed interesting, and something we haven't seen on other devices yet.

We should have more details about Samsung's folding phone at the S10 launch on the 20th of February, there should be a foldable from Oppo at MWC, and we're also expecting a more budget-level foldable-lite from LG. At this point it seems like everyone's working on a foldable, despite there not being any proof yet that they'll sell well.

What do you think of the bendy Xiaomi? Would you buy it? Will foldables catch on? Let us know in the comments, we are obsessed. [Engadget]
