It seems every national holiday is an excuse for bonkers new foods now, and while we're used to chocolate everything for Easter, Aldi has come up with something a bit different this year. (Are we really prepping for Easter already? We haven't even had Pancake Day yet. Grumble grumble.)
The budget supermarket has some... interesting new flavours of hot cross bun on the way for Easter 2019, for anyone who thinks currants are passé.
As well as its standard Luxury Fruited hot cross buns and the popular brioche variety, Aldi will be offering Blueberry, Very Berry, Rhubarb & Custard, Salted Caramel & Belgian Chocolate and Apple & Cinnamon. We're not sure what to make of that -- bit high-falutin for Aldi, isn't it?
According to Good Housekeeping, the supermarket's serving suggestions are similarly fancy:
"Aldi recommends serving this unique flavour as a seasonal dessert by topping the buns with poached rhubarb, cream and crushed pistachios, although a toasted hot cross bun slathered in butter always makes for a great teatime treat."
Thankfully, the prices are still distinctly Aldi: the buns will start at 89p when they go on sale on the 7th of March.
We hope there'll be some left over for the supermarket's epic charity donations.
