MWC 2019: Phone Cases Give us Another Look at the Huawei P30, P30 Pro, and P30 Lite

By Tom Pritchard on at

Remember a while back when we saw renders of the Huawei P30 on a case website? Then when some horrendous renders 'leaked' and showed off something completely different? Well it looks like the first one was right, and we know this because a different case maker had some actual cases on show at MWC. Cases that show off the camera design for the P30, P30 Pro, and the P30 Lite.

The first bit of news is that this seemingly confirms that there indeed be three different P30 phones, not that anyone guessed that there wouldn't be. Phone companies are nothing if not predictable. They also show off that the P30 and P30 Lite will have the same triple-lens camera design as last year's P20 Pro. In other words two camera lenses stuck together and a third sitting on its own a little bit lower. Oh and a hole-punch camera on the front, which shouldn't be too shocking.

Interestingly the P30 Lite is the only one with a cutout where the fingerprint scanner should be, suggesting the others will have the new scanning tech that hides under the display.

On top of all these revelations is the fact that the P30 Pro does seem to have a fourth camera lens. But it's a sensible quad-camera design, because all four lenses are in a single row. That said the flash has been shifted off towards the middle, along with some other sensor. That nasty fake-looking design glimpsed earlier this month looks like a complete fabrication.

Unfortunately we can't take all this stuff as being 100 per cent accurate. For starters some of the promo art on the stand was showing a render of the 'P30 Pro' with a hole punch camera, while all the cases feature the waterdrop notch seen on the Mate 20.

Though, to be honest, the front of the phone is largely irrelevant for case makers. They're in the display, and any case that obscure part of the display is worthless. But it does show that not even these sort of 'leaks' are completely infallible - even if they do feel more trustworthy than some of the stuff we see online. Then again there are images claiming to show off a triple-camera P30 Pro circulating online, so who the fuck knows what to believe anymore.

At least we only have a month to find out for sure.
