Aldi's Own-Brand Rum Wins Gold Medal at Blind Tasting Competition

Aldi's product team must be feeling pretty smug today, after the company's own-brand rum beat brands almost three times the price at the Spirits Business Rum Masters awards.

Costing just £16.99 for 70cl, Sea Dog Premium Spiced Rum took gold for its taste and value for money, but although tasters knew the price, they didn't know which rum was which.

Aldi describes the Sea Dog rum-based drink as having "notes of sweet vanilla, warming spices, coffee and a citrus lime kick, finished with a deep rum aftertaste."

Another Aldi product, the Old Hopking Spiced Rum – even cheaper at £9.99 for 70cl – was given a silver medal.

The Metro reports that Aldi's £10 gin beat Waitrose's £25 Heston Blumenthal bottle last year.
