This is the kind of thing you're unlikely to bother patenting if you weren't planning on using it. Yesterday, an Apple patent for a curved battery design surfaced from the USPTO. Will the next iPhone be curved rather than a dead-straight slab like it is now? Read More >>

That vaguely familiar chap up there is the HTC One carrying an extra three or four stone in additional flab, thanks to the Mophie Juice Pack. In return for fattening up your phone you get nearly double the battery life, which is a trade off we suspect many will take. Read More >>

Battery life is arguably the most finicky heavily-argued part of the 'phone reviewing process. Different reviewers try everything to try and get an objective battery life, from custom-built apps, to the elusive 'normal-use', or just looping Nyan Cat until your brain explodes. Question is, what test would you like to see the full gamut of high-end smartphones tortured with? Read More >>

The problem with these super-skinny phones that we're all getting is that battery life, frankly, sucks. I still remember a time when battery life could be measured in days, not hours. If the latest Google X Phone rumour is to be believed, it'll come packing a big battery rivalling the Motorola MAXX line. But would you buy it if it wasn't the thinnest phone in the world? The iPad Mini doesn't have many advantages over the likes of the Nexus 7, the Kindle Fire HD, or even the Nook HD, not least because it's quite a lot more expensive. But, one thing Apple's 7-incher does better than anyone else is battery life. Apparently it's got whole 3.2 hours more juice in the tank than any of the others. Read More >>

If you're getting tired of seeing the purported guts of the iPhone 5, we feel for you. What good is a notebook that dies two hours after it's unplugged from the wall? Not much. We've created a list of the clamshells that ran the distance on the LAPTOP Battery Test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi). Each machine lasts (at least) to the 7-hour marker, but some systems use larger, sold-separately batteries to stay active up to 20 hours. See for yourself below. Read More >>
Batteries are essential in our everyday lives. But their prevalence doesn't necessarily mean that it's easy to understand how they work. In this video, the engineering guy Bill Hammack takes a look at perhaps the most basic battery of all — the lead-acid cell — in order to explain the fundamental science behind every single battery you've ever used.
