Why I Will Never Want a Smartwatch

Like NFC, the smartwatch concept is a Rube Goldberg solution to a problem so small that it is solved by reaching into your pocket. And solutions to small problems work best when they're little ineffable features, not entire products or platforms. One of the core issues with the concept of NFC, or at least how it is being implemented, is that it does not really free you from anything. It just does the same things, with slightly more hassle and risk of battery failure, as a credit card or cash. A credit card which you still have to carry around, because not everyone is going to accept NFC. The convenience of having your payments consolidated onto your phone was outstripped and undermined by several payment companies consolidating your payment data the way the NFC wallet was originally supposed to, leaving it with just the gimmick of tapping your phone to pay. And that's nothing more than technologically decadent lateral movement. Read More >>

Can the World's Thinnest Keyboard Cut a German Sausage?

If you cast your mind back to 2009, you might recall the Palm Pre had an edge so sharp, it was able to cut through cheese. Qualcomm's Toq Smartwatch Is a Tonne Better Than Samsung's Galaxy Gear

Disregarding my opinion that smartwatches (unless they're the Pebble, or something as intuitive and elegantly-executed) can all be tossed in a skip and set on fire, I'm actually really impressed after a brief play with the Qualcomm Toq (pronounced "talk," not "toc." Dubbed "the anti-Galaxy Gear" (by us), such is the stripped-down nature of what's crammed inside the 1.5-inch display, it's more of a pimped-out watch than Dick Tracy phonewatch. And that's a good thing, before you ask. Read More >>

Wait, What? No! Samsung’s Smartwatch Has a Leather Case, Too?!

There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the latest round of touchscreen timepieces like the Galaxy Gear, not the least of which being the fact that you'll apparently even be able to get a faux-leather stitched case for it. Guh. WHO WOULD DO THIS??? Read More >>

It's safe to say that Android tablets haven't quite managed to capture the aesthetic beauty of Apple's iPad mini.
