The hardware on the Kindle Fire HD is pretty sweet. Nice screen, sexy speakers, and a durable-if-forgettable build. The gigantic BUT, however, comes in the form of Amazon's custom skin that they slather all over the Kindle Fire series. Thankfully, you don't have to settle for Amazon's software -- by rooting and flashing a custom ROM, there is Another Way. Read More >>

The iPad Mini doesn't have many advantages over the likes of the Nexus 7, the Kindle Fire HD, or even the Nook HD, not least because it's quite a lot more expensive. But, one thing Apple's 7-incher does better than anyone else is battery life. Apparently it's got whole 3.2 hours more juice in the tank than any of the others. Read More >>

The iPad mini has finally arrived—Apple's much anticipated response to the incredibly successful 7-inch tablets pioneered by Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and more recently by Google with its Nexus 7. So far they are the only tablets that have made a dent in Apple's near monopoly on tablets. Millions were sold—and that got Apple's attention. Over the past year there have been increasingly credible accounts of a small iPad prototype being developed by Apple, but there was no guarantee that it would turn into an actual product until Apple's official announcement. There's almost no question that the iPad Mini is a terrific device; it's got too much pedigree and money behind it to be anything else. But barring some sort of miracle from Ive, it's also certifiably overpriced. And that's a bad sign for Apple. Read More >>

Less than a year after the first generation of smaller tablets gained traction, a second generation of 7-inchers has arrived—the Google Nexus 7 launched in July and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD in September. There are many other manufacturers making small tablets, but these are the only models seeing significant demand.
