Shooting Challenge #25 -- The Message (Win a Sony SmartWatch 2 and Charity Donation)

60 years ago this week, history was made; the helpline charity Samaritans took their first call. The Samaritans were founded by the London vicar with a very trendy sounding name, Chad Varah, in response to a funeral he conducted early on in his career: a girl aged 14 had started menstruating, but having no one to talk to, believed that she had a sexually transmitted disease and took her own life. Shooting Challenge #24 (Patterns) -- The Winner Is...

The last Shooting Challenge brief was simple and straightforward; photograph patterns and shapes in the world around you. As usual, we had some high-quality images and some very...err...creative ones too (I'm looking at you, Patrick). I know the weather was pretty shitty for most of you during the challenge 'window', so thanks for taking the time to take part, those of you who did. Read More >>

Shooting Challenge #24 -- Patterns

It's hard to believe that we've been doing Shooting Challenges on Giz UK for over a year now, and yet I've still got a long list of ideas in my little black book. As it is approaching Halloween, I had originally planned to do a ghostly-themed challenge, but thought that would require too much effort and was less about photography and more about re-creating old Halloween costume photographs, so decided to ditch that one. Shooting Challenge #23 — Trees

Of all the things I love to photograph, I have to put trees somewhere near the top. They're like people; they have a life of their own and every single one of them is different. Some are loners, while others huddle together in vast forests of green, and they all make fantastic photographic subjects. Read More >>

Shooting Challenge #22 (Drawing With Light) - The Winner Is...

In the last Shooting Challenge, we set you the task of creating a photographic light painting; the photographic technique where pictures are created by moving a light or series of lights in front of a camera. While simple in concept, light painting can be incredibly time-consuming, and so I thank everyone who took time to send in their images. Read More >>

Shooting Challenge #22 — Drawing With Light (Win £500 of Victorinox Kit)

The Spanish painter dude Pablo Picasso is known for many things: painting, sculpting; wearing striped clothing, and also, for being one of the co-founders of cubism. He was also a bit of a fan of the photographic technique light painting, after being introduced to it back in 1949. Read More >>

Shooting Challenge #21 -- World In Motion (Win an iPad 4!)

In 1872, while photography was still in its infancy, English-born murderer and owner of one fantastic beard, Eadweard Muybridge, was asked to photograph a horse in order to answer the age-old question of whether or not all four of a horse's hooves left the ground while galloping (spoiler alert: they do). It was to become the foundations of a long photographic study in motion that spanned several years and over 100,000 photographs. Read More >>

Shooting Challenge #20 (Golden Hour) — The Winner Is…

For the last Shooting Challenge we set you the very simple task of capturing Golden Hour -- that magic time between night/day and day/night where the light is softer and diffuses more due to the angle of the sun, which means colours are warmer and more golden. Read More >>

Shooting Challenge #20 -- Golden Hour (Win a Tokyoflash Watch)

Golden hour (also known as magic hour) is that magical time of day, that most photographers say is the best time to shoot outside. During this special time between night/day and day/night, the light is softer and diffuses more due to the angle of the sun, meaning shadows are both longer and softer (if there are any at all) and colours are warmer and more golden. This can make landscapes and outside portraits look lush, with it being ripe for silhouettes too, as you can see above. Read More >>
