It's not often government shows a touch of class, but TfL's gone and done just that. After a letter from the widow of Peter Lodge, the original "Mind the Gap" man, requesting that it be played on the Northern Line at Embankment, just so she could hear his voice again, London Underground has re-instated the classic announcement at Embankment, and is planning to roll out it to other platforms too. Simply brilliant. If you don't know the tale behind the iconic catchphrase, check out the story on [The Importance of Being Trivial] Read More >>
Right now, hybrids like the Prius, as well as super-efficient diesels, are exempt from London's pricy Congestion Charge, but TfL's latest proposals to rake in another £2 million a year aim to change that. Got a tiny diesel or a hybrid? You'll have to pay a tenner a day just to drive in London, and that plain stinks of yet more government money grubbing. Read More >>

There's nothing that simultaneously terrifies and excites us Brits like a wee bit of snow. For the whole night before a minor snowfall, the news will be filled with hacks eagerly reporting on grit stockpiles, weather forecasters bounce around like small children, and Ranulph Fiennes gets called in to lecture on frostbite. It's a BIG DEAL. But don't worry, it's just a bit of precipitation: you're a 21st Century man or woman, and you can beat nature! Read More >>
Much as I might gripe about the Tube (and boy, do I love to gripe), it's still an awesome machine and an incredible achievement -- 270 stations, 402 kilometres of track and an insane 1.2 billion journeys per year. And today it turns 150! Do you think trains like birthday cake? Read More >>
It's January 2nd, and for lucky rail commuters across the country, that means our annual dose of fare hikes. Yippee! Take a close look at the numbers, though, and it's clear that we're getting totally, utterly, unashamedly ripped off. Read More >>

Oyster-haters, rise up: your time is here. As of RIGHT NOW, you can pay for your bus travel (within London) using a NFC card or smartphone of your choosing. I can barely contain myself. Read More >>
Well here's a thing. Ever wondered why London and other major cities around the UK don't use NFC-based payments for public transport yet? Apparently it's just too damn slow to cut the mustard and be actually useful. Read More >>

Virgin and London underground are continuing their roll out of speedy free Wi-Fi, flicking the switch on 32 additional stations across the capital. Considering it's faster than your average home broadband connection, and free, maybe it's time to take your downloads underground. Read More >>

The first signs of life from Virgin's new London tube station Wi-Fi plan are immerging. The network is currently being installed across stations deep underground, and the BBC's been in to kick the tyres and test the speeds. Read More >>

Spotted on the Central line tube in London: A chap reading (and annotating!) some paperwork titled "The Basics: What is a penis extender?" True, he was probably an overworked copywriter working on a particularly-embarrassing project as Reddit commenters suggest, but please don't rain on my parade anymore than the existence of penis extenders already have, mmmkay? Like news of a Brangelina engagement or major world event, news of London's Bakerloo line tunnel collapsing at Embankment station has reached the ears of Twitter first, with TFL confirming "an obstruction in [the] tunnel at Embankment" and almost the whole Bakerloo line suspended. An hour after the first Twitter Chinese whispers, no-one's still 100 per cent sure what exactly happened down there. Read More >>
After a myriad of delays, the final stages of the £60m cable car over the Thames that connects Greenwich and the O2 Arena with the Royal Docks just across the river are being put into place. All three supporting towers are now up and one of the 1.1km steel cables stretching over the water is set undergoing testing; the project is apparently s on track to complete before the Olympics, but unfortunately neither you nor I will be able to ride it initially. London’s in the midst of preparations for the onslaught of Olympic tourists – even TfL’s given the humble tube map an Olympian-infused makeover. Out with your Waterloos, Eustons and Baker Streets and in with the likes of Emma Snowsill, Michael Jordon and Daley Thompson. Even Ian Thorpe, Denise Lewis and Steve Redgrave have their own stops. We heard that the Tube was going to get free Wi-Fi in stations before the Olympics, but now London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson, has announced that it’ll be Virgin who’s handling the initially-free service for Transport for London. It’ll be shoving in hotspot gear into 80 stations across the network to come online in July, with a further 40 to be Wi-Fi-enabled before the year is out. Read More >>
A couple of lines on the London underground are already ‘driverless’ – the Victoria, Central and Jubilee lines are all automated right now. Now the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, wants all drivers to hop-out-of-it to turn the entire network into a well-oiled automated machine without all that fleshy human weakness. Read More >>
